Understanding Exfoliation: Mandelic Acid vs. Scrubs
Share
Exfoliation is the single most effective way to brighten your complexion. By removing the top layer of dead, dull skin cells, you reveal the fresh, light-reflecting skin underneath. It fades dark spots, smooths texture, and helps your other products absorb better.
But for years, we have been doing it wrong.
Most of us grew up using harsh physical scrubs—those apricot pit or walnut shell pastes that feel like sandpaper. While the "scrubbing" sensation feels satisfying, dermatologists have declared war on them. Here is why you should ditch the scrub and switch to science.
The Problem with Physical Scrubs
Under a microscope, crushed walnut shells or apricot pits look like jagged glass. When you rub them on your face, they create micro-tears in your skin barrier. You can't see them with the naked eye, but your skin feels them.
These micro-tears lead to:
- Chronic inflammation (redness).
- Broken capillaries (spider veins).
- Increased sensitivity over time.
- Spread of bacteria (if you have active acne).
The Science of Chemical Exfoliation (AHAs)
Chemical exfoliants don't scratch the skin; they dissolve the "glue." They gently loosen the bonds holding dead skin cells together, allowing them to shed naturally. It is uniform, gentle, and far more effective.
Why Mandelic Acid is the "Gentle Giant"
Not all acids are the same. Glycolic acid, for example, has a very small molecule that penetrates fast—sometimes too fast, causing irritation.
At Simply Clear, we chose Mandelic Acid (derived from bitter almonds) for our Resurfacing Serum because of its unique molecular size.
- Large Molecule = Less Irritation: Mandelic Acid is almost twice the size of Glycolic Acid. This means it penetrates the skin slowly and evenly. You get the glow without the sting.
- Antibacterial Properties: Unlike other AHAs, Mandelic Acid is naturally antibacterial, making it the perfect choice for adult acne or breakout-prone skin.
- Safe for Melanin-Rich Skin: Harsh acids can sometimes trigger hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones. Mandelic Acid is famous for being safe and effective for treating pigmentation without causing rebound darkening.
How to Incorporate It
If you are new to acids, start slow. Use our Hyaluronic Acid + Mandelic Acid 15% serum 2-3 nights a week. Apply it to clean, dry skin. You might feel a tiny tingle—that means it's working. Wake up to smoother, brighter skin, without the damage of a scrub.
