5 Acne Myths That Are Ruining Your Skin

Acne is frustrating. It is emotional. And unfortunately, it is confusing. There is more misinformation about acne than perhaps any other skin condition. From "drying it out" with toothpaste to scrubbing your face until it squeaks, most traditional advice actually makes acne worse.
At Simply Clear, we believe in treating acne with science, not myths. Here are the 5 biggest lies about breakouts, and the clinical truth you need to know.
Myth #1: "You need to dry out a pimple to kill it."
The Truth: Drying out your skin triggers a disaster. When you strip your skin of all moisture using harsh alcohol toners or drying pastes, your skin gets the signal that it is dehydrated. In response, your sebaceous glands go into overdrive, producing more thick, sticky oil to compensate.
The Solution: Regulation. Instead of drying, you need to regulate oil production. This is the job of Zinc. Found in our Zanic Serum, Zinc inhibits the enzyme that causes excess oil, effectively turning down the volume on sebum without stripping the skin.
Myth #2: "Toothpaste is a good spot treatment."
The Truth: This old wives' tale needs to retire. Toothpaste contains baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and essential oils like menthol that are far too harsh for the skin. They can cause chemical burns, leaving you with a dark, stubborn mark (PIH) that lasts months longer than the pimple would have.
The Solution: Targeted Actives. Use a spot treatment formulated for skin, not teeth. Our Acne Estop uses ingredients like Azelaic Acid and Retinal to target the bacteria safely.
Myth #3: "Scrubbing your face cleans deep into pores."
The Truth: Pores are not doors; you cannot "scrub" them open. Physical scrubs (using apricot pits or walnut shells) only work on the very surface. If you have deep congestion or cystic acne, scrubbing will only tear the top layer of the pimple, spreading bacteria across your face and causing more inflammation.
The Solution: Chemical Exfoliation. To clean inside the pore, you need an oil-soluble acid like Salicylic Acid. It penetrates through the oil to dissolve the gunk from the inside out. (Found in our Sali Silic Serum).
Myth #4: "Sunscreen clogs your pores."
The Truth: This might have been true in the 90s, but not anymore. In fact, skipping sunscreen makes acne marks worse. UV rays darken the pigment in post-acne scars, turning temporary red spots into permanent brown marks.
The Solution: Non-Comedogenic SPF. You need a modern sunscreen like Sunguard, which is formulated to be lightweight and "non-comedogenic" (won't clog pores), ensuring your marks fade faster.
Myth #5: "Acne is caused by dirty skin."
The Truth: You cannot wash away acne. Acne is caused by a combination of hormones, genetics, sticky skin cells, and bacteria. Over-washing disrupts your acid mantle and weakens your defense against bacteria.
The Solution: Balance. Wash your face twice a day—no more. Let your leave-on treatments, like the Zanic Serum (Day) and Acne Estop (Night), do the heavy lifting. Skincare is a marathon, not a sprint.
